New Clubhouse to be Built in Flagstaff

New Clubhouse to be Built in Flagstaff

Ground was broken last Friday morning for the construction of a new $15,000 clubhouse by the Flagstaff’s Woman’s Club. The project is expected to be completed by December 10th of this year. The new building will be located on the north side of West Aspen Avenue, between Humphrey and Kendrick Streets. The design will be an adaptation of Spanish-Colonial style, with red brick walls and gray brick trimmings. The front of the building will have a brick gable, while the rear will feature a hip roof. The overall size of the clubhouse will be 52×85 feet, with a composition roof and red slate finish.

The main rooms will include an auditorium and a club room, which can be combined for larger gatherings using sliding doors. The interior finish will consist of native pine, with hardwood floors and plastered walls and ceiling. Additionally, there will be a large fireplace in the clubroom. The Woman’s Club have already purchased the lot and have raised a considerable amount of money towards the cost of the building.

In other news, Governor Thomas E. Dewey, Republican presidential nominee, declared that the future of the United States lies with Arizona and other Western states. He expressed optimism about the opportunities for irrigation and hydro-electric power in the state, stating that the future of the country exists in the West. Meanwhile, President Truman campaigned in California, criticizing Republican proposals and stating that they only offer “crumbs for the little fellow.”

In terms of forest fires, the Coconino National Forest saw fewer fires this year compared to the previous year, but the total acreage burned was potentially the largest in the forest’s history. There were a total of 330 fires, covering 5,600 acres. Four major fires, all human-caused, accounted for 5,200 acres.

Looking ahead, completion of Interstate 17, Flagstaff’s route to Phoenix, as a full four-lane freeway is expected by late 1975. This is ahead of the designated completion date for the nation’s entire interstate system. The highway, connecting Phoenix to Flagstaff, is the only interstate route within a single state.
