Northern Lights Activity Expected to Increase as Sun Approaches Solar Maximum

Skygazers in the northern United States can look forward to more opportunities to witness the beautiful aurora lights in the coming years. Solar activity is expected to peak in 2025 during Solar Cycle 25, leading to an increase in the occurrence of the Northern Lights.

Recently, solar activity created dazzling displays of dancing lights in the Northern Tier. Reports of the Northern Lights were received from states such as Michigan, Montana, and Minnesota, where the skies were illuminated in shades of green, red, and purple.

The Northern Lights are typically found near the poles, but they are straying further south due to increasing space weather. The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) in Boulder, Colorado, issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch after a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun was observed with an Earth-directed component. This resulted in the recent aurora lights observed in the United States.

The Sun is currently approaching its peak activity in Solar Cycle 25, which began in 2019. The SWPC has been closely monitoring solar activity as the Sun approaches solar maximum. Another Moderate Geomagnetic Storm Watch was issued for Monday as a CME arrived.

While increasing space weather may not be a cause for concern for most people, this solar cycle is exceeding the predicted “average” activity forecast by the Solar Cycle 25 Prediction Panel. In August, 114 sunspots were recorded, surpassing the estimated range between 59 and 109. This increase in sunspots and CMEs means there will be more opportunities for people to witness the Northern Lights further south than during less active times in the solar cycle.

According to Space Scientist Robert Steenburgh, the public should expect to see more news about the Sun’s activity and the Northern Lights as we approach solar maximum in the next two years. The Space Weather Prediction Center will also have new forecasting tools next year with the launch of the Space Weather Follow-On-L1 observatory (SWFO-L1) spacecraft. This satellite will provide improved space weather forecasting and will help predict geomagnetic storms and aurora lights.

Overall, the increase in solar activity is not a cause for alarm but rather an opportunity to witness the wonders of the Northern Lights.

Skyloom Global Corp. has entered into an agreement with Satellogic Inc. to integrate Skyloom’s Optical Communications Terminal (OCT) onto Satellogic satellites. This partnership aims to test new methods of high-resolution Earth Observation (EO) data delivery.

By utilizing Skyloom’s OCT, Satellogic plans to deliver high-resolution EO data through Skyloom’s geostationary-based (GEO) lasercom network infrastructure called SkyCompass-1. This network infrastructure, developed in collaboration with Space Compass, will significantly decrease latency by enabling direct downlink to a gateway within view of the low altitude image area.

As part of the initial commissioning process, Satellogic’s spacecraft will establish a low Earth orbit (LEO)-to-ground link by handshaking with Skyloom’s optical ground station in Broomfield, Colorado (BOGS). The agreement between Satellogic and Skyloom follows a feasibility study on the ability of Satellogic’s Mark-V platform to establish lasercom links.

To further enhance their optical communications network infrastructure, Skyloom, together with Space Compass, recently conducted a Critical Design Review for SkyCompass-1. This network infrastructure, consisting of space, ground, user, and network segments, is scheduled to begin providing network services in 2025.

Satellogic is known for designing, manufacturing, and operating its own constellation of submeter EO satellites. With over a decade of experience, Satellogic aims to deliver high-resolution data to customers at an affordable price point. Their goal is to deploy 200+ satellites in orbit for daily global remaps. The company often partners with SpaceX for rideshare launches.
