Repurposing Wind Turbine Blades as Bridges

Engineers have found a solution to repurpose decommissioned wind turbine blades as bridges capable of supporting up to 30 tonnes of weight. With the average lifespan of turbine blades ranging from 20 to 25 years, many wind farms from the early 21st century are now being upgraded. The disposal of these blades has become an environmental challenge, as they are mostly sent to landfill or incinerated.

To address this issue, the Re-Wind Network was established, a collaborative effort between five universities and research institutes in Ireland, Northern Ireland, and the US. Their goal is to find sustainable ways to recycle wind turbine blades. While potential applications such as bus shelters, street furniture, and telecommunications towers have been considered, bridges have proven to be a practical option for repurposing the blades. Two footbridges have already been successfully built in Draperstown and Cork.

Professor Jennifer McKinley from Queen’s University Belfast expressed her satisfaction with the project, stating the importance of transforming these blades into something useful to avoid their disposal in landfills or incineration. Another bridge is planned to be constructed in Atlanta, Georgia, and the research team intends to focus on expanding the size and length of these bridges.

According to estimates, approximately 8.6 million tonnes of decommissioned wind turbine blades will accumulate within the next 20 years. However, the glass fibre reinforced polymer material used in these blades has the potential to be utilized in a wide range of objects, including motorway noise barriers and playground equipment.

The Re-Wind Network project has also led to the establishment of BladeBridge, a spin-out startup that aims to commercialize the idea of repurposing turbine blades.
