Hawaiian Electric Begins Repairing Damaged Electrical Equipment in Lahaina

Hawaiian Electric has announced that it will be replacing poles and other electrical equipment damaged during the recent wind and fire in Lahaina. The decision to start the repair work came at the request of Maui emergency management officials.

The main focus of the repair efforts will be to restore power to wastewater pumps and telecommunication services in the area. In addition, the work is expected to improve electrical service reliability for surrounding residents and neighborhoods.

Temporary poles, transformers, power lines, and other equipment will be installed to provide power while long-term plans are developed to meet future energy needs. These plans are expected to be community-driven. It is worth noting that the temporary infrastructure will not prevent the possibility of underground utilities in the future.

The Emergency Operations Center and Maui Emergency Management Agency have requested the work to commence in the coming weeks. The county wastewater pumps in the area will be among the first to be restored. Additionally, once repairs are completed by Hawaiian Electric, the central office in Lahaina for telecommunication services could also be restored to grid power.

The repair work will also facilitate the interim rebuilding of two backup circuits. These circuits will enable power to be rerouted to customers and neighborhoods in the Puamana, Launiupoko to Olowalu, and mauka of the Lahaina Bypass areas. Currently, these areas face extended outages due to the lack of backup circuits. Power from the two temporary mobile substations installed last month by Hawaiian Electric cannot be rerouted.

Hawaiian Electric has successfully restored power to over 95 percent of Maui customers who experienced electricity loss in West Maui and Upcountry. In West Maui, all affected customers who can be restored are back online. However, the remaining areas without power in Lahaina are under the jurisdiction of the Emergency Operations Center. Hawaiian Electric is awaiting approval from the EOC before additional customers in these restricted-access areas can be restored.

HECO Starts Replacing Damaged Equipment in Lahaina

HECO (Hawaiian Electric Company) has commenced the replacement of poles and other electrical equipment that were damaged on August 8th. The work includes the installation of temporary poles, transformers, power lines, and other equipment in Lahaina and its surrounding areas. These measures are being taken to restore power to wastewater pumps and telecommunication services, as well as to enhance service reliability in nearby neighborhoods.

HECO is currently awaiting approval from the Maui emergency operations center to restore power to the remaining customers in Lahaina. Efforts are underway to develop long-term plans for power restoration in the area.
