Digicel Jamaica Foundation Urges Residents to Protect Telecommunications Equipment

Charmaine Daniels, the CEO of the Digicel Jamaica Foundation, is calling on residents to do their part in safeguarding telecommunications equipment from vandals and thieves. This includes protecting fiber cables and computer hardware that provide internet access for students.

Daniels made this appeal during a recent media interview where she also announced the signing of two memorandums of understanding with the Ministry of Education’s Region Four office. These MOUs involve the creation of two computer smart-rooms at Esher Primary School in Hanover and Unity Primary School in Westmoreland. The smart-rooms, valued at US$60,000 each, will provide valuable resources for the students.

With incidents of theft and vandalism targeting telecommunications equipment becoming a growing problem in Jamaica, Daniels stressed the importance of community involvement in protecting the infrastructure. She acknowledged that Digicel can’t do much in terms of policing, so it relies on the cooperation of the communities.

In response to this ongoing issue, Minister Daryl Vaz, in his Sectoral Debate presentation, highlighted the seriousness of the problem and disclosed that arrests and charges have been made in connection with theft during the previous financial year. The telecommunications companies in Jamaica have suffered significant losses due to these criminal actions.

Schools have also fallen victim to telecommunications thieves and vandals. Earlier this year, Sydney Pagon STEM Academy in Elim, St Elizabeth, was burglarized, resulting in the theft of computer equipment and cash. In response, the police arrested two individuals in connection with the robbery.

The Digicel Foundation is committed to ensuring the security of the smart-rooms it plans to construct across Jamaica. Each smart-room will be equipped with 12 laptops, 12 tablets with headset connections, a smart screen, and a commercial printer. Safety measures, such as smart locks, will be implemented to protect the equipment.

The foundation urges school principals and the school population to take responsibility for maintaining the investment in these smart-rooms. The goal is to provide a safe and conducive environment for students to make use of these valuable resources. The Digicel Foundation plans to construct 10 smart-rooms in primary schools across the country by 2024.

Gov. Burgum Takes a More Assertive Approach at Republican Presidential Debate

What a difference a month can make. Gov. Doug Burgum demonstrated this at the second Republican presidential primary debate held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. In his first debate appearance in August in Milwaukee, Burgum remained restrained and waited to be called upon, but this did not result in a polling boost for his campaign. However, in California, he took a far more assertive approach.

Despite potentially shifting some voters’ perceptions of his candidacy, experts believe that this new strategy is unlikely to change his standing in the race. Prior to the debate, Burgum was in a precarious position, but he managed to meet the polling threshold just in time for the final slate announcement. University of Michigan Director of Debate, Aaron Kall, noted that Burgum made an effort to capitalize on this opportunity.

One of the main issues with Burgum’s initial performance in Milwaukee was his lack of articulation regarding his business and technology background. However, according to Kall, Burgum was able to define this much more clearly in the second debate. Additionally, Kall mentioned that the more aggressive approach allowed Burgum to seek more airtime, something he struggled with in the first debate.

Despite this effort, the moderators did not give Burgum much opportunity to speak. They only posed a direct question to him after 45 minutes of the debate, offering him just four questions and shutting him down multiple times.

It remains to be seen how Burgum’s more assertive approach will impact his campaign going forward.

Southern Power Acquires Millers Branch Solar Facility

Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company and a leading U.S. wholesale energy provider, has announced the acquisition of the Millers Branch Solar Facility from EDF Renewables. This acquisition marks Southern Power’s 29th solar project and further enhances its solar portfolio.
