Local Events This Weekend

This weekend, there are several local events happening for sports enthusiasts to enjoy. Here are some of the upcoming events:

On Saturday, the College of Idaho will be hosting Rocky Mountain College for a college football game starting at 1 p.m. Montana State University will also be playing against Idaho State at 2 p.m. Meanwhile, the women’s college soccer team of Montana State Billings will be facing off against Northwest Nazarene at 1 p.m.

If you prefer high school sports, the Class A State Meet for golf will take place at Sidney Country Club with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Additionally, there will be a Wrangler National Team Roping Finals at the First Interstate Arena at MetraPark Expo Center starting at 9 a.m.

For volleyball fans, there will be several matches to watch. The Montana State Billings volleyball team will be playing against Alaska at 2 p.m., while Rocky Mountain College will face off against Montana Tech at the same time. Additionally, three high schools in Billings (Senior, Skyview, and West) will be participating in the Helena Crossover starting at 10 a.m. The Lewistown volleyball team will also be playing against Laurel at 3 p.m., and Sidney will be facing off against Lockwood at 4 p.m.

Jennifer Van Buskirk, executive vice president and general manager of mid-markets for AT&T, will be speaking at West Texas A&M University’s Stan Sigman Leadership and Innovation Series on October 12. The event, which will take place at Legacy Hall in the Jack B. Kelley Student Center on the university’s Canyon campus, is free and open to the public. Van Buskirk is known as one of the most powerful women in the telecommunications industry and her insights on leadership and innovation are sure to resonate with both the Texas Panhandle and campus communities. The Stan Sigman Series was made possible through gifts from former colleagues of Stan Sigman, a late alumnus and supporter of WT. In addition to her public speech, Van Buskirk will also hold a private session with College of Business faculty and students and record an episode of the Sigman Leadership and Innovation podcast.

West Texas A&M University’s Distinguished Lecture Series

West Texas A&M University’s Distinguished Lecture Series will feature five nationally known speakers this fall. The series is free and open to the public. The schedule includes poet Aaron A. Abeyta, who will be giving a reading; Microsoft executive Sandra Lopez, who will speak on career empowerment and leadership; dyslexia expert Dr. Jack M. Fletcher, who will discuss the science of dyslexia; poet Chad Abushanab, who will read his work; and Dan Flores, A.B. Hammond Professor Emeritus of Western History at the University of Montana, who will deliver a lecture on Western Studies. The events will take place in various locations on the university’s campus and are sponsored by different organizations and departments within the university. This series provides an opportunity for the community to hear from and engage with respected speakers in various fields.

Outstanding Western Book Award

Historian and University of Oklahoma professor Dr. Anne F. Hyde has been awarded the 2023 Outstanding Western Book from the Center for the Study of the American West at West Texas A&M University. Her book, “Born of Lakes and Plains: Mixed-Descent Peoples and the Making of the American West,” explores the history of intermarriage between whites and Indigenous populations in the American West. Hyde will be accepting her award at an event in January. The book has been recognized with several other awards and is praised for its in-depth examination of the complexities surrounding mixed-descent families in the American West.

New Professorships Established at WT

West Texas A&M University has established two new professorships in the Department of Agriculture. Dr. Lance Kieth will serve as the Couch Family Professor of Extension Education, named after John and Lennis Couch and their daughters. Michael Semler will serve as the Dr. Bob and Cleo Robinson Professor of Livestock Judging, named after a legendary extension agent and longtime professor. These professorships were created to continue the tradition of service to students in the agricultural field. Gifts of $125,000 or more made the establishment of these professorships possible.

Northern Lights Activity Expected to Increase as Sun Approaches Solar Maximum

Skygazers in the northern United States can look forward to more opportunities to witness the beautiful aurora lights in the coming years. Solar activity is expected to peak in 2025 during Solar Cycle 25, leading to an increase in the occurrence of the Northern Lights.

Recently, solar activity created dazzling displays of dancing lights in the Northern Tier. Reports of the Northern Lights were received from states such as Michigan, Montana, and Minnesota, where the skies were illuminated in shades of green, red, and purple.

The Northern Lights are typically found near the poles, but they are straying further south due to increasing space weather. The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) in Boulder, Colorado, issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch after a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun was observed with an Earth-directed component. This resulted in the recent aurora lights observed in the United States.

The Sun is currently approaching its peak activity in Solar Cycle 25, which began in 2019. The SWPC has been closely monitoring solar activity as the Sun approaches solar maximum. Another Moderate Geomagnetic Storm Watch was issued for Monday as a CME arrived.

While increasing space weather may not be a cause for concern for most people, this solar cycle is exceeding the predicted “average” activity forecast by the Solar Cycle 25 Prediction Panel. In August, 114 sunspots were recorded, surpassing the estimated range between 59 and 109. This increase in sunspots and CMEs means there will be more opportunities for people to witness the Northern Lights further south than during less active times in the solar cycle.

According to Space Scientist Robert Steenburgh, the public should expect to see more news about the Sun’s activity and the Northern Lights as we approach solar maximum in the next two years. The Space Weather Prediction Center will also have new forecasting tools next year with the launch of the Space Weather Follow-On-L1 observatory (SWFO-L1) spacecraft. This satellite will provide improved space weather forecasting and will help predict geomagnetic storms and aurora lights.

Overall, the increase in solar activity is not a cause for alarm but rather an opportunity to witness the wonders of the Northern Lights.
