Language version:

New Zealand government has gone on and approved the major telecom reform package. An overall number of broadband subscribers in New Zealand has been able to increase steadily in recent years, though at a very slow rate in line with the higher market penetration. Principal development areas have been in mobile broadband as well as the fiber sectors. The trend is going to continue over the coming years as Ultra-Fast Broadband services see great uptake among the consumers. By the year 2017, on March, close to three-quarters of build in UFB1 sectors had been completed with a close to a third of the premises taking the service.

The second phase of UFB is going to extend coverage to close to 84% of the total population by the year 2024. Together with UFB, incumbent telco Spark has been planning to be able to replace the legacy PSTN network with the IP based network by the year 2022. The New Zealand mobile market has continued to undergo significant developments. We have witnessed some considerable gains made in the LTE services, with the effective competition that is between Spark, NZ, Vodafone and country’s number three mobile operator 2degrees. The coverage from the LTE networks has widened in the recent quarters, well supported by Rural Broadband initiative rollout that has been adding a large number of the mobile cells to the new or the underserved areas. This is what has bolstered uptake of mobile broadband. The network operators do also offer among the fastest LTE data rates in the world.

With the improved broadband connectivity, average price for every GB of data for the fixed broadband has declined to close to a fifth of this, four years ago, while ten percent of the broadband connection is now at the tier, minimum of 100MB/s. The report does assess key statistical data as well as the regulatory measures in this country telecom market. It does cover fixed-line sector as well as the progress of UFB network rollout. This report does also cover fixed as well as the wireless broadband market, noting that the rapid take-up of the fiber-based services among the consumers. Also, this report does analyze development in a mobile voice as well as the data segments. Some of the key companies that have been mentioned in this report include: Black+White, Compass, Gemalto, Spark New Zealand, Chorus, WorldxChange Communications, Maxnet, Vodafone New Zealand, 2degrees.

We are currently engineering the network connectivity for a client that requires to establish internet connectivity at a number of sites throughout the Cook Islands. As part of the design I want to define the modem and modem settings that are required. We can then ensure the correct modems are supplied and the configuration is correct as far as interfacing to our networks. Can you provide me with details of your coverage plans for residential and/or business internet. Additionally, what plans do you have that include a fixed IP address. The sites will be Atiu, Mitiaro, Mauke, Mangaia and Rarotonga. Please advise which sites will be DSL and which will be satellite. Also please nominate what modem make and model shall be provided.
