Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynt Marshall has played a significant role in forming a groundbreaking partnership between the WNBA’s Dallas Wings and the NBA franchise. Before Marshall’s hiring, the Mavericks’ relationship with the Wings was minimal. However, Marshall’s efforts have now led to a marquee agreement between the two teams.
The Wings, an independently owned WNBA team, prominently display the Mavericks logo on their jerseys, along with the insignia of the team’s initiative called “Girls Empowered by Mavericks” (GEM). This landmark partnership marks the first time the WNBA has a marquee agreement with an NBA franchise operating under a different ownership group.
The GEM program, which reaches over 3,000 girls in the Dallas area, offers camps, wellness clinics, and workshops focusing on finances and leadership skills. The agreement highlights the growing visibility and influence of the Wings since their move to the Dallas area eight years ago. The team currently plays in the University of Texas at Arlington’s arena.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban credited social media as a significant factor in the increased attendance, TV ratings, and influence of WNBA players in recent years. As the Wings aim for their first playoff series victory since their move, this partnership could fuel further growth for the team.
The collaboration between the Mavericks and the Wings began with discussions before the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020. Over time, the partnership grew, with Wings players participating in GEM events and former player Isabelle Harrison completing an internship with the Mavs. Marshall also expressed a desire for more internship opportunities for players.
Cynt Marshall was hired by Mark Cuban in the wake of a scandal surrounding a hostile workplace for women in the Mavericks’ business office. Cuban’s lack of awareness and proactive response to the allegations was criticized, leading him to donate $10 million to causes supporting women. The Mavericks organization has since prioritized values of character, respect, authenticity, fairness, teamwork, and safety.
The partnership between the Dallas Wings and Dallas Mavericks signifies a significant step forward in promoting collaboration and empowering girls in the Dallas community.
